Notebook, 1873.

Notebook kept by Messinger as a midshipman while he was aboard the U.S.S. Constellation, (sister ship to the Constitution) for a practice cruise in 1873. The volume provides detailed descriptions of the rigging, sails, lines, and general equipment. The text is accompanied by twenty-one hand drawn illustrations that diagram different components of the ship. Comments in another hand suggest that changes were made to the vessel during the cruise.
